Television viewers may also be able to catch the series on cable. All 26 episodes should hit video retailers by summer. Thanks to Japanimation distributors Manga Entertainment and Bandai Entertainment, Stand Alone Complex will soon be available in the U.S. Acclaimed Japanese film studio Production IG, known for its work on Blood: The Last Vampire and Kill Bill, produced the series. The show was called Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and continued the online and offline adventures of the Section 9 investigation team. In 2002, a TV series based on the film went on the air in Japan. The Ghost in the Shell story didn't end there. While not as deep or intellectual as some anime films, Ghost in the Shell remains an example of good animated filmmaking. The original story revolved around an AI entity, escaped and on the loose in the ethereal world of computer systems and networks, attempting to achieve full sentience while a group of investigators – one a female cyborg – hunt it down. As much good anime does, Ghost was able to take interesting science-fiction concepts and philophical ideas, and explore them without losing its mainstream entertainment appeal.
